Many roofs of agricultural businesses contain asbestos. All asbestos-contaminated roofs must have been replaced by 2024. At the same time as the solar panels are being installed, asbestos is being removed. This not only guarantees sustainable energy, but also provides an immediate public health benefit. Agricultural businesses don't have to make any investments, nor do they have to worry about the installation or other aspects. Instead, they pay a fixed contribution that is lower than their current electricity bill.

The initial Boer Kiest Zon I project is followed by Boer Kiest Zon II. BNG Bank has provided funding totalling EUR 25 million. The funding for Boer Kiest Zon II will be spent on investments in solar panels and asbestos removal for the benefit of the agricultural sector in the province of North Brabant and the municipality of Noordoostpolder. In total, a number of 140,000 solar panels will be installed – equivalent to the energy needs of around 11,500 households. Together, the Boer Kiest Zon projects will generate 40 MW of solar power. The total surface of the asbestos-contaminated roofs that will be replaced is 200,000 m2.

Managed by Agreco Beheer B.V., Boer Kiest Zon offers sustainable asbestos removal, solar panels and energy savings solutions that are tailor-made for the agricultural sector. Once the solar panels have been installed, Boer Kiest Zon will remain responsible for the operation, monitoring and maintenance of the arrays for a period of 20 years.
