Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology

02 October 2014 - Good health and well-being (SDG 3)

On 1 October 2014, the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology and a banking consortium consisting of Rabobank and BNG Bank signed an agreement to fund this national centre for children with cancer.

Immediately afterwards, treatment of the first patients with solid-state tumours began in a wing of the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital (WKZ) in Utrecht that had been temporarily dedicated to this purpose.

The Princess Máxima Center's new building adjacent to the WKZ is now nearing completion. In 2018, the desired concentration of care and research will have been achieved in full.

The credit agreement is signed
The credit agreement is signed by (l to r) Pauline Bieringa, Director of Public Finance at BNG Bank, Selma Huizer, Senior Manager Public Finance at BNG Bank, Paul Venhoeven, President of the Executive Board of the Princess Máxima Center and Rob Pieterse, paediatric oncologist and member of the Executive Board of the Princess Máxima Center.

Paul Venhoeven, President of the Executive Board of the Princess Máxima Center, is very pleased with the agreement: 'This is great news for everyone who wants Dutch children with cancer to have a better chance of survival. This is the main financial cornerstone of the concentration we need. It demonstrates strong faith in our plans. The credit agreement has been signed on the basis of our business plan, the contracts we have signed with health insurers and our collaboration with UMC Utrecht/WKZ. Now we can proceed in earnest.'

Comprehensive solution

The EUR 125 million credit agreement is intended to raise working capital for health care, fund the Princess Máxima Center's new building and equip it. It will allow the new building in Utrecht to be fully funded. Rabobank Utrecht and BNG Bank are funding an equal amount.

Princess Máxima Center

The Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology is an initiative of patients' parents and Dutch paediatric oncology professionals to combine the very best care and research expertise into a single national paediatric oncology centre. Its aim is to increase the recovery rate among children from 75% to more than 90%.
